Reiko Iwanaga: Honoring a Cultural Torchbearer

This time in our “Asian, American, Amazing!” series, we celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Reiko Iwanaga, a pivotal figure in preserving and promoting Japanese cultural arts within our community.

Reiko Iwanaga has spent her life preserving and sharing the beauty of Japanese dance and culture. From an early age, she was immersed in the tradition of odori, first learning from her mother and later studying under Bando Miharu while incarcerated at the Amache internment camp during World War II. That early foundation shaped a lifelong passion, leading her to become one of the most respected figures in the Bon Odori community.

For decades, Reiko has been at the heart of San Jose’s Bon Odori celebrations, ensuring that this vibrant dance tradition continues to bring people together. Bon Odori, performed during the Obon festival, is more than just a dance—it is a way to honor ancestors, foster community, and celebrate cultural heritage. Reiko has taught and led countless dancers, passing on the movements, meaning, and joy of this art form to new generations. Her leadership has helped keep these traditions alive, ensuring that they remain an integral part of the community’s identity.

Beyond her work in dance, Reiko’s influence extends into broader cultural preservation efforts. Through her dedication, she has strengthened the bonds of San Jose’s Japanese American community and provided a platform for cultural expression. She has also been an active supporter of CATS by helping uplift local artists and performers, ensuring that their voices and stories are heard. Her involvement highlights her belief in the importance of creating spaces where Asian American creativity can thrive.

Kenji Taguma, Editor-in-Chief of Nichi Bei Weekly and President of the Nichi Bei Foundation, nominated Reiko for this honor, recognizing her tireless work in preserving and sharing Japanese cultural traditions.

Through her dedication, kindness, and unwavering passion, Reiko Iwanaga continues to inspire generations to embrace their heritage and celebrate the beauty of cultural traditions. She reminds us all of the power of dance, the importance of community, and the lasting impact one person can have.
